Vienna Day 1
(If you are reading this blog just for Eliott and/or Jen they only make a brief cameo right at the beginning of this post. However, if you stick with the post you may find it enjoyable, entertaining and maybe even enervating.)
Hello everyone,
Once I left Eliott and Jen in Innsbruck I took the train to Vienna. The train was largely uneventful except that the ticket checking guy (porter?) looked like Santa Claus, enormous beard and all.
In Vienna, I had not booked a hostel in advance but I had seen that there was quite a few near the Westbahnhof (West Train Station). So I got off there and the first hostel I walked into gave me a bed in a four person room. While I was waiting in line I met a couple of Canadians that had been in the Dachau tour group with us. This hostel actually just opened at the beginning of May and it is very new and shiny. The best perk is free internet. My roomates in Vienna are three grandmothers from Australia who are in the middle of a 6 month adventure through Europe.
Once I was booked in, had eaten (I had Doner Kebap) and checked the internet I fell asleep exhausted form all the traveling and the getting up ridiculously early.
Today, I ate breakfast at the hostel and then went over to the Parliament building. I got a little tour and then I went to the observation gallery to watch the Austrian MP’s debate. The one thing I learned is that all democratic politicians are the same. Old, fat people that are constantly on their blackberries when not heckling the speaker. But, it’s a heck of a lot better than the alternatives.
Next, I went to the Schonbrunn palace, where I saw a pretty boring display of imperial cookware and an interesting display on Kaiser Franz Joseph II and his wife Sisi. It was cool how they gave a history of the second half of the 1800’s in Austria through the lives of the monarchs.
Afterwards, I ate lunch, that I had bought from a bakery earlier, in the park in front of the palace. In the park there was an exhibit about the EU because Austria holds the presidency of the EU this year. The exhibit was in German but there were lots of pictures to help me follow along. Fun Fact: The countries in the EU whose citizens have the least sex per year are also the most likely to commit suicide. The exhibit had a history of the EU, art about European countries working together and other less interesting statistics.
Next, I went to St. Stephens cathedral. The cathedral is very tall and is in the center of the city. For those of you that do not know, Vienna is layed out as a series of concentric circles. From the cathedral I went to do a bit of window shopping. Vienna is officially my favourite city to shop in. In my aimless wandering I found 5 game stores, 4 comic shops and an enormous toy store. I also have finally been converted to Gelatto. I went to this Italian place and it was really delicious. (Banana and Mango in case you are keeping score.)
While walking around I also went to Cafe Central. It was pretty opulent. Lenin and Freud used to hang out there to smoke and play chess. (Not with each other, but probably around the same time.) I did not stay because I was still full from lunch and the ice cream but tomorrow I am going to go to another famous cafe to eat some pastries.
For dinner, I went to this awesome place recommended by the good monkies at Wikipedia. (What do you get when infinite monkies have finished typing Hamlet on infinite typewriters? Wikipedia) Figlmüller apparently has the best Wiener Schnitzel in Austria and the line out the door to prove it, but it was well worth the wait. I complemented my flattened veal with freshly pressed grape juice and the house salad which was a kind of potato salad with mixed greens (like california greens kinda) and pumpkin seed oil.
Afterwards, I wandered around the Bermuda triangle (the local bar district) but there were very few people around and nothing much exciting going on.
Then I came back here and typed this. Free internet is awesome but when you keep having to log back in every fifteen minutes it gets kind of annoying (it is a securitish system they have here to try to get people not to overuse the comps.)

I agree. I love Gelato. It was all over the place in Vancouver. There was a little Italian cafe walking distance from my house where an Italian mama and papa made the most delicious flavours. muah!

I’ll second that. gelato is the best thing ever. Eli and Jen, make sure you have some in Rome - if you’re gonna eat gelato, Italy is the place to do it of course.
Meanwhile, I still need to emphasize the fact that it pleases me to no end to know exactly what Jeremy is eating at any point in the day - to the extreme detail of the dressing he put on his California greens. I love it.
